WAFL: Round Eight Match Preview vs Peel Thunder

Friday, June 2, 2023 - 11:58 AM

Sunday is set to be a massive clash for the Lions, when they take on the top of the ladder Peel Thunder at Lane Group Stadium on June 4.

The two sides in the early stages of the 2023 season are showing they’re both in the mix to feature in September action.

With just two games separating first from sixth on the ladder, a win for either side will be important in the context of the season.

FORM

The Lions were able to regroup after the bye, taking a one point win over Swan Districts at Leederville Oval last weekend.

The win was needed for Subiaco, who prior to the week off fell to East Fremantle.

The side’s record sits at five wins and two losses for the season, to sit in fourth spot on the ladder but on equal points to the second-placed Sharks.

Meanwhile, Peel Thunder looks like the real deal in 2023.

With Fremantle’s AFL list healthy, the Thunder’s side looks strong with a host of quality players.

They’ve won four of their last five games, with their only blemish coming in round three against South Fremantle.

The two sides will look to put each other through their paces on Sunday.

LAST TIME THEY MET

Subiaco were competitive against Peel when the two sides faced in round 13 of last season.

After being neck and neck for three quarters, the Thunder stormed home in the last to win by 26 points.

Stef Giro was important against his old side, with 34 disposals and six inside 50s, while Drew Rohde played a key role in defence, amassing 26 touches.

ONE TO WATCH

Subiaco’s form has turned around from last season, with many of the players improving on their output from last year.

While Galen Savigni was impressive in his first season, he’s gone to another level in 2023.

The 21-year-old is getting his hands on the football more this year, and is providing plenty of drive from the back half.

Against some of the Thunder’s AFL-ready forwards, his role in quelling them before starting the chain will go a long way towards the Lions getting the four points.
