2023 EDFA & GFL Zone Carnival
Across the WA Day long weekend, Esperance played host to the Subiaco Zone Carnival at Ports Football Club. Here the best year 9, 10 boys and youth girls from the Goldfields Football League and Esperance Districts Football Association play off in a contest for bragging rights for the best League as well as an opportunity to impress Subiaco FC recruits who were down watching the games.
Day 1 of the carnival, GFL won convincingly over EDFA in the year 9’s with some solid performances from GFL’s Zim Clark and Boyden George while Druce Blythman and Caleb Zloich did their best for EDFA. While in the year 10 game, the GFL just got over the line in hard fought battle as Jayden Schmitt and Tyrell Pickett made solid contributions against the EDFA’s Jaxon Meyer and Tom Tate, putting in work as their side just going down. Last game of the day was the youth girls where GFL came in clutch with the 2 point win over EDFA in a tight and contested contest. Chloe Seivwright and Ava Neill from the EDFA put in their best efforts but the skill of Chanelle Halligan and Marley Kelman were too good and held onto a nice win.
Day 2, Subiaco Rogers coach Jasmine Cookson and Futures coach Steve Gough held a training session for the youth girls from both GFL and EDFA. The girls were given an inside look into what a Subi Rogers session looked like and together as one team picked up some new skills.
Later in the day saw the boys graded matches be played. The GFL B’s knocked off EDFA B’s with some solid performances from Dan Simpson, Gian Coulls from GFL and Brett Quinn and Matt Donnelley from the EDFA. While in the GFL A’s vs EDFA A’s a great contest was played in windy conditions but the EDFA A’s got the win with Aiden Finlay-Mulligan awarded best on ground.
“The carnival showed a strong display of talent from the year 9 & 10 groups from Subiaco’s regional zone from Kalgoorlie and Esperance. We’ve had some great players from these competitions over the last couple years and looks like there are a lot more coming through,” says Subiaco’s Talent Manager Stuart Berryman. “It’s great to see a number of girls interested in getting involved in Subiaco FC. We’re building a pathway for the girls similar to our boys talent pathway which will strengthen Subiaco Women’s in the years to come.”
Subiaco FC would like to thank those who contributed to the 2023 Zone Carnival: Ports football club for hosting this amazing event and Newtown Condingup for the accommodation. Shane Liddelow & EDFA staff for ongoing support as well as Eshe Christie and the GFL for getting team together and down to Esperance.
