WAFLW: Round 15 Match Preview vs South Fremantle
As far as occasions come, this week’s match for Subiaco will be as close to a final as you can get in the Home and Away season.
At Fremantle Community Bank Oval on Saturday June 17, the Lions will be looking to knock off a contender in South Fremantle, to keep their season in their own hands.
It’s a team the Lions have the wood over throughout their short history in the competition, but the Bulldogs are an improved side in 2023.
The clash is set to be a ripper, with each team having plenty to play for.
FORM
With the equations well and truly in place, Subiaco knew they had to defeat Peel, and they did so in style with a 41-point win at Leederville Oval.
The Lions kept the Thunder scoreless, to help boost their percentage by 15.
It was a much needed victory, following back-to-back losses over Claremont and Swan Districts, to keep them in the hunt.
South Fremantle on the other hand looks a completely different side than last year.
After missing finals in 2022, the side is in second this year, and is set to feature in July.
However, the side most recently lost to East Fremantle, and had the bye last week.
It means they will be ready to go when they take on the Lions.
LAST TIME THEY MET
Round one saw the two sides draw for the very first time.
In a close game, but one the Lions were ahead for most of, South Fremantle kicked the only scores of the final term, to have the sides even at the final siren.
The final score was 5.4 (34) to South Fremantle’s 4.10 (34).
Olivia Crane had a strong performance for the Lions, with 22 disposals and four tackles.
ONE TO WATCH
Midfielder Meg Brown has shown patches of her best throughout the season, but it all came together against Peel Thunder.
The 23-year-old had 27 disposals and two goals, which is her best output in her short career to date.
Brown has become an important part of the Lions’ engine room, and will look to continue her good form against the Bulldogs.
