WAFLW: Round 16 Match Preview vs West Perth
With a tall task ahead of them, Subiaco will be looking to give their all in the hopes of a finals berth, when they take on West Perth at Yanchep’s Splendid Park on Saturday June 24.
The clash looms as the Lions’ last chance to clinch a spot in finals, needing a strong win to remain a chance.
They’ll be looking to finish the home and away season on a high when they face the Falcons.
FORM
Throughout 2023, Subiaco has looked competitive in most weeks, but has let late results become costly.
The Lions had a strong win against Peel Thunder in round 14, but it was their only win in the past month.
They remain within touching distance of the finals, but would need to win well, and have Peel do the same against East Fremantle, to stay alive.
Meanwhile, West Perth has improved in their second season in the competition.
They’ve notched five wins this year, including two in the past month.
They will not be an easy win, and Subiaco will need to fight to keep their season alive.
LAST TIME THEY MET
The Falcons defeated the Lions for the very first time when the two sides went head to head in round eight.
West Perth got ahead before half time, and were able to hold on for the 11-point win.
On the day, Grace Hahnel gave it her all, with 17 disposals and four tackles.
ONE TO WATCH
While it’ll be important for the side to kick a big score, the Lions must first and foremost secure the four points.
Defence will hold key to that, and Charlotte Newland’s role is an important one.
Holding the ability to shut down an opponent, as well as creating drive from the backline, the 18-year-old will be key to the Lions keeping their season alive.
