WAFLW: Subiaco ends season on a high with win over Falcons
Subiaco has officially finished their season on a high, with an emphatic 36-point win over West Perth at Splendid Park, Yanchep on Saturday June 24.
Needing to win well to remain a chance at finals, the Lions were able to play football that defied the wet conditions.
A four-quarter effort saw Subiaco keep the Falcons to just one point for the match, keeping the hope alive.
However, other results meant the Lions had to bow out of season 2023.
Eva Popovsky was influential in the midfield and up forward, with 13 disposals and a goal to her name.
Meanwhile, Liana Burchell had a strong presence in the backline, and was key to keeping the Falcons to a low score.
The rain was well and truly pouring when the game started.
After West Perth got the first score, the Lions responded through Fina Dethlefsen, who kicked the first goal of the match.
With a heavy breeze blowing across the ground, the game was stuck in a state of stoppage football.
The scores began to flow in the second term, with Popovsky kicking the first of the quarter.
Subiaco controlled the ball from the source, and prevented the Falcons from getting any dominance on the contest.
Hayley Corlett was involved heavily, kicking truly to help the Lions to a 20-point lead at half time.
With the mindset that a big win was required, Tiah Toth got on the scoreboard in the second half, with a major from point blank range to continue her side’s momentum.
Subiaco couldn’t be stopped on the day, with only missed opportunities in front of goal preventing the margin from skyrocketing.
With a 30-point lead at three-quarter time, and with the game wrapped up, the Lions continued to press.
Despite West Perth getting the ball in their forward half late, the Lions wouldn’t give in, refusing to let their opposition score.
Corlett had the final say on the scoreboard, kicking her second as Subiaco finished off 2023 with the win.
The Rogers Cup side was also victorious, taking a 40-point win over Perth at Mineral Resources Park.
