Fast-finishing Subiaco not enough to take down Tiger
A late surge from Subiaco wasn’t enough to get over the line against Claremont, falling by seven points at Revo Fitness Stadium on Saturday July 1.
Having trailed the Tigers from the second minute of the game, the Lions threatened to steal the game when they caught fire in the fourth quarter.
Back-to-back goals from Subiaco had the side daring to steal the win away from home.
The Lions had their chances, but weren’t able to take full advantage.
It left the door open for the Tigers to take the 10.14 (74) to 10.7 (67) win.
For the Lions, Ben Golding continues to prove he’s at the level, with two goals from 17 disposals.
Meanwhile, Taj Schofield was classy with 19 disposals and two majors to his name, and Liam Hickmott continued his fine season as he notched up his 50th WAFL game.
Claremont got off to the better start, with Alex Manuel kicking the first goal of the match.
The Lions pressed from there, but were matched by the Tigers.
They could only manage minor scores, until Golding got within range and kicked truly to give Subiaco the lead.
With both teams fighting hard early, it was Claremont who grabbed the early momentum, kicking four goals in a row to lead by 22 points at the first break.
Subiaco was under siege to begin the second term, with the Tigers peppering the ball inside 50.
The Lions defence, led by Angus Dewar and Galen Savigni, managed to prevent any major scores for the opening minutes.
However, constant pressure led to Claremont eventually capitalising, as they stretched their lead to 36 points.
At risk of the game getting away from them, some slick ball movement from the Lions resulted in Golding hitting the target of Michael Braut in front of goal, who made no mistake.
Forward Ryan Borchet was able to convert shortly after, to bring Subiaco back into the game.
However, the third term started the same way as the second, with Claremont able to get repeat shots in front of goal.
While the defensive pressure from the Lions was high, scores were needed to bring the margin down.
Max Walters answered the call, kicking back-to-back goals to bring the margin back to under four goals.
For every attack Subiaco made, Claremont were prepared to counter at the other end.
But in the fourth term, the Lions began to get some ascendancy.
Stef Giro kicked truly from a snap, giving the Lions the momentum.
Golding was influential in the fourth, kicking his second goal to bring his side within 11 points.
When Taj Schofield kicked the checkside goal late, it provided hope for Subiaco.
However, Claremont was able to weather the storm, taking the four points in the process.
The loss moves the Lions back to the pack, sitting in fourth on percentage, but equal with East Perth and Peel Thunder on points.

Subiaco suffered a heartbreaking six-point loss at the hands of the Tigers, going down in the dying seconds.
Claremont had been on top all game, leading by as much as 30 points in the last quarter.
But the never give in attitude of the Lions brought them back into the contest, evening the scores with five minutes to go thanks to a Connor Patterson major.
However, in the last minute of the game, the Tigers scored through Menno Inverarity, leaving too little time for the Lions to get the score back.
Corey Robinson had a strong showing in his first game since round six, with 31 disposals and six marks.
Meanwhile, Jordan Lockyer made his return from his knee injury, with 14 touches and five marks.

Playing at Albany’s Centennial Stadium in the evening, Subiaco fell by 24 points at the hands of Claremont.
It was the Lions who were first to strike, as Kieren Douglas kicked the first goal of the match.
Subiaco performed strongly in the first half, leading by 10 points at the main break.
However, the Tigers continued to challenge, taking the lead before extending it in the final term.
It marks Subiaco’s first loss in the Colts since round three, breaking a run of six wins in a row.
Xavier Hickey had an influence in the backline with 14 disposals and six marks.
