WAFL: Lions go down fighting to Peel in NAIDOC Round

 

Subiaco has been left to rue missed chances early, going down by 14 points to Peel Thunder at Leederville Oval on Saturday July 8.

In a tight game where the final margin was the biggest of the game, the Lions dominated the match early but couldn’t get scores on the board.

It left the door open for the Thunder to come back, who did the damage in the second half.

They kicked six goals to Subiaco’s two after halftime, despite finishing the game with eight less inside 50s.

It proved costly, with the Lions forced to take the 8.10 (58) to 6.8 (44) loss.

 

Defender Kyle Stainsby performed strongly, negating the influence of Bailey Banfield.

Meanwhile, Jack Mayo was a strong link between the lines, with 16 touches and a goal.

The result has the Lions sitting in fifth on percentage, with two wins separating the side from first place.

After a smoking ceremony pre-game, the match started off heavily contested.

Sebit Kuek kicked off the match for the away side, toe-poking through the first goal.

Shortly after, Mayo kicked a remarkable goal from the wrong side for a left footer, splitting the middle with ease.

The Lions continued to play the quarter in their forward half, dominating the inside 50 count.

Ben Golding kicked truly to increase the lead to eight points at quarter time.

The Thunder fought back in the second term, kicking three goals to take the lead.

However, back-to-back goals from Ben Sokol and Ben Golding had momentum back with the Lions.

 

After half time, the momentum was with Peel.

The Thunder kicked three goals in the quarter, to take back the lead.

Subiaco on the other hand was left goalless, trailing by six points at three quarter time.

Blair Bell threatened to take the game away from the Lions early in the last, putting through the set shot.

However, the Lions refused to back down, continuing to press.

Although there were missed chances, Zac Clarke took his chance, bringing his side back into it.

It broke a four-goal run for the Thunder.

Shortly after Ryan Borchet got the Lions ahead, with a 35m set shot.

However, Ethan Stanley’s goal in traffic got his side the momentum, as they ran away with the game.

A five-goal haul from Richard Farmer has helped the Lions to a 42-point win over Peel Thunder.

It was Farmer who kicked things off with the first goal of the game.

The Lions were on top early, kicking four goals to one in the first term.

With the game still in the balance to start the second half, Subiaco got to work, kicking away for the seven-goal win.

Along with Farmer, Corey Bellouard had a strong showing, with 26 disposals and 11 marks.

In the early game, Subiaco were inaccurate, but ultimately secured the 27-point win over Peel.

Eight behinds were kicked between the two sides before Koopa Walsh kicked the first goal of the match.

The two sides continued to trade goals, with the Lions taking an 11-point lead at half time.

In the third quarter, Subiaco got a move on, kicking five goals to two to get some separation, which helped them claim the win.

Tyler Senge found plenty of the ball with 28 disposals, while Oscar Dees was everywhere with 27 touches.
