Colts: Remaining games a chance for momentum, as Subiaco prepares for finals run
With a spot in the Colts finals already wrapped up with two games to go, Subiaco are looking to build on their momentum in what's shaping to be an exciting finals series.
The top four is separated by just two wins, with Subiaco in fourth on percentage.
Despite sealing their finals spot, Colts coach John Mansbridge said there’s plenty to play for in the remaining fixtures.
“On any given day, anyone in the top four can beat anyone else, and I wouldn’t discount West Perth in fifth,” he said.
“It’s going to be a great finals series once it all starts.
“We’ve still got a couple to go and we play East Fremantle in the final round so that could be for a top three spot.”
Finishing in the top three would grant Subiaco a double chance, which is important for teams in the finals race.
Mansbridge said the importance of it isn’t lost on anyone.
“The double chance is always where you want to be,” he said.
“It gives you almost a free crack at it in that first final where you can really go hard and try to win to get an opportunity to play for a Grand Final spot.”
Subiaco has had a couple of players help them to get where they are in season 2023.
Riley Wills has taken his game to another level after battling injury, featuring for WA’s State 18s.
Mansbridge credited the 19-year-old’s ability to persevere.
“He’s really battled to get some continuity with his body,” he said.
“Even at the start of the year, he didn’t get through a whole preseason but came good around January/February.
“To get where he got playing state footy is a credit to him.”
Lance Collard is another who has impressed for the Colts.
Mansbridge said he’s one who can do anything on a football field.
“He’s super quick, can kick a goal from nowhere, and has the ability to change a game,” he said.
“It’s almost an impossible match up, because you need to be fast, you need to be aerial, and you need to be on your game to match up with him.”
There have been multiple contributors for the side, with Luker Kentfield, Tyler Senge, Lachie O’Keefe, Lachie MacRae, Dylan O’Dea, and Xavier Hickey all contributing to the side’s success across the year.
Part of their success also goes to the support staff.
Mansbridge said the assistant coaches and the support team are helping get the squad ready for game day, and wouldn’t be a success without them.
