Subiaco Futures Season Report

The future is bright.

The WAFL Futures competition produced a successful season for Subiaco, the young Lions winning eight of nine games, with the only defeat coming in the final round to West Perth by just two points.

This year the club decided to run with a smaller squad of 27 locals and 12 regional boys rotating through from Kalgoorlie and Esperance.

Coach John Simmons said one of the most pleasing aspects from the season was character and professionalism of the squad.

“It was an invaluable step in their football journey,” said coach Simmons. “They now launch into school, state or club footy with a wonderful platform already established”.

Subiaco Talent boss Stu Berryman was quick to commend the families of the country kids for their commitment and effort, which went a long way to such a successful campaign.

“To drive seven hours and then return for a game of footy and in some cases to do it multiple times is no mean feat, and we cannot thank the parents, family and friends who supported the boys in their quest to play at an elite level,” Berryman said.

Corbin Boylson, Antonio Crupi, Thatcher Simmons, Harrison Gilford, and Angus Abbonizio were all rewarded for their super season by being named in the WA State 16’s squad.

Berryman said while the five Lions made the State 16’s squad deserved their place, several others were unlucky to just come up short but still had opportunities for higher honours next year and beyond.

The 16’s season was largely due to the hard work and effort by the coaching group, headed up by John Simmons, who according to club officials, sacrificed a great deal to give the team the best chance of success.
