Clinton Brown 2024 Ball Legend
When dual Subiaco premiership player and 200-gamer Clinton Brown was told the club wanted him to be the 2024 ball legend, his response would not come as a surprise to anyone who played with him or knows him.
“I told Capesy (club CEO Peter Capes) they must be scraping the bottom of the barrel,” Brown quipped.
Capes, was part of the South West Lions get together in Brown’s hometown of Dunsborough recently organised by Laurie Keene, when he approaching the 1986 and 1988 premiership star.
“A couple of flags, 200 plus games and almost as many goals, throw in State footy and various roles at the club after his playing days ended, we (the club) could not think of a more deserving legend for this season,” said Capes.
A couple of beers and a good night sleep and the honour started to sit more comfortably with Brown.
“There has been some great names as ball legends at all WAFL clubs, so I am pretty chuffed. I love the club and to be a part of the action in this way each week is rather humbling,” Brown added.
Brown started his time with Subiaco as a forward, but was transformed into one of the competitions best defenders by coach Haydn Bunton jnr.
In 1986 against East Fremantle, Brown played in the back pocket, lining up on WAFL great Brian Peake in the Grand Final.
“I had played on Darren Bennett in the second semi and he kicked 10, so I don’t think Bunts wanted to take that risk in the Grand Final two weeks later,” Brown said.
Two years later Brown was also in the back line when the Lions took care of Claremont to win the 1988 flag.
Clinton Brown spent 38 years in the WA Police Force and is now retired in Dunsborough where he proudly shows off his SFC 003 number plates.
