Raffle Re Launches Despite Fuller's Passing
For as long as most dyed-in-the-wool Subiaco supporters and members can remember, it would not be the annual fundraising club raffle without the Basil Fuller touch.
Sadly, the legendary Lion passed away a few months ago but as Basil would say, “the show, or in this case, the raffle must go on”.
The Lions Community Raffle is a important fundraiser for Subiaco and aligned junior clubs, like zoned clubs Sorrento-Duncraig, Warwick Greenwood, Kingsley and Carine who are some of the bigger beneficiaries.
Subiaco’s Commercial Manager Joe Georgiades said the club wants to honour Basil Fuller with this year’s annual raffle.
“This has been a staple on our fundraising calendar and it has always been Basil's baby." Georgiades said.
Sorrento-Duncraig receive almost 1,000 books ($20 each) every year, and allocates them to all of their junior players as part of their club fees. The club pockets approximatley $10,000 to put towards growing their club.
Michelle Richards, Sorrento-Duncraig president says "the money is a huge help with the ever increasing equipment costs, especially full price footballs at $120 each."
“We have been lucky enough to have been involved in this raffle for as long as I can remember,” Richards said.
“The amount of money we have raised through the raffle does not go unnoticed or taken for granted by the committee and the club families,” president Richards added.
“I must admit it does feel a bit different this year with the loss of Basil. I think I would get at least three follow up calls a year from Baz, keeping an eye on tickets sales and making sure we (Sorrento-Duncraig) were keeping up our end of the bargain,” Richards said.
This year there will also be an online ticket component for people who prefer.
Subiaco hopes anyone who may have not previously bought a ticket or a book of tickets, makes a special effort this year in honour of Fuller and his incredible hard work for the club over many decades.
"Basil was all aboput trying to grow the Club and our relationsghip and support to our Junior Clubs so hopefully we can carry on that legacy"
This year’s raffle is proudly supported by the Home Collective and with a number of other great club partners with a chance of winning a host of great prizes such as a $5,000 travel voucher, an 8x Seater Suite at the Eagles or Dockers ($2,500 each), A Holman Backyard Package ($1,000) or a Leederville Hotel Voucher ($500).
