Ferocious Lions into a Grand Final
The Subiaco Rogers secured a narrow win over East Fremantle at Revo Fitness Stadium on Saturday. The 2-point victory guarantees that, one way or another, the first ever Finals series for the squad ends in the Grand Final.
Subiaco started off well, playing with pressure and opening up the game to some quick ball movements. However, East Fremantle soon closed the gap, tightening the game up and ensuring that both teams entered Half Time with the scores level.
“The whole second half was a battle of hard, contested footy with neither team being able to open up the game,” Coach Dane Edwards recounted. In the final break, Subi only had a 2-point margin to start the fourth quarter with.
“Going into the last quarter, my message was pretty simple. ‘There’s 20 minutes left. It's going to come down to whoever wants it more, whoever is willing to give everything they have. You’ve worked way too hard all year to finish up now, let's just get it done.’”
In the end, Subi wanted it more, defeating East Fremantle 5.8.38 to 5.6.36.
Layla Quinn-Schofield was fantastic up forward as usual, walking away with 3 goals to her name. Edwards was adamant, however, that the spotlight be shared.
“All I can say is that there were 22 standout players,” he said. “There was a great feeling amongst the group and energy was most definitely up. As a collective it was easily one of our best ever team efforts and because of that they now have the opportunity of playing off in this week's Grand Final.”
The Rogers Cup Grand Final will be held on Sunday, July 7th at Pentanet Stadium from 11:10 AM. Subiaco will go in as the underdogs facing West Perth, who have gone undefeated in 2024 and are looking to secure back-to-back flags.
