Girls Exceed Expectations
The 2024 Rogers Cup season is now officially wrapped up, with Subiaco claiming the Runners-Up position after losing to West Perth in Sunday’s Grand Final at Pentanet Stadium.
The 30-point defeat was a convincing one; Subi struggled to move the ball up forward and never ended up taking a scoring shot, ending the match scoreless.
The match was an incredibly messy and scrappy affair right from the get-go; 6.6mm of rain turned West Perth’s home ground into boggy marshlands. Players from both squads struggled to get purchase on the Burley for much of the gametime, and while Subi may not have had a shot at goal, West Perth’s accuracy clearly struggled in the weather, kicking 3.12.
The girls, however, did not give up until the final siren, putting their hearts and souls into the contest until the season ultimately finished. Captain Ava Tavolaro especially, who put her body on the line and suffered a brutal knock in the last seconds of the match, being carried off the field as West Perth were presented their cup on-stage.
Subiaco has certainly achieved a great deal in the Rogers Cup this year, enjoying their first Finals series and proving to the rest of the competition that they are a force to be reckoned with on the field.
Subiaco ended the season having played more games than any other side, with 14 Home & Away matches in addition to 3 finals, ending the season with 11 wins to 6 losses. They clawed their way to the Grand Final from third on the ladder and personally ended the seasons for Swan Districts and East Fremantle in two fantastic matches to get there.
West Perth claims back-to-back Rogers Cup flags, on top of remaining unbeaten for the entire 2024 season.
