Finals Wk 1 Recap
Subiaco double-dipped in success on Sunday with victories in both the Reserves and Colts at Revo Fitness Stadium, with the games being Qualifying Finals for their respective grades in the Week 1 of Finals.
In the first game of the morning, Subi’s Colts squad took down West Perth with a 25-point victory. Subiaco led the entire match, with an electric second quarter that displayed some of the Lions’ best work. Dylan Prance kicked a monster goal from outside 50 in congested play which set the whole stadium alight. Not to be outdone, Charlie Burke followed up with another outside 50 goal straight out of centre bounce 90 seconds later.
While the Falcons pushed back in the third term, closing the margin to just two goals, Subiaco finished out the match and kept West Perth goalless in the final quarter, finishing 11.15.81 over 8.8.56.
Finley Henderson stood out with his efforts in the forward line, kicking 3.3 for the match, while Burke made an impact with 21 disposals. The Colts’ defensive line was also on point, with Thomas Macgillivray collecting 9 tackles and helping keep West Perth out of their own forward line.
An hour later, the Reserves team took to the field against East Fremantle in what would end up being a classic nailbiter.
Subiaco played aggressively, with 4 goals in both the first and third quarters, and led by 24 points at the final break. The warning signs were, however, apparent; statistically, both teams had nearly totally equal possession time with the ball and were neck-on-neck for disposals.
East Fremantle opened the final quarter with 4 unanswered goals in 8 minutes, and eventually closed the margin down to 0. In the end, Subiaco would manage to hold on to win by 4 points and keep the ever-vital second chance in Finals.
Individually, many of Subi’s Reserves put in standout performances. Rylie Morgan landed a career-best 10 tackles, while Benjamin Golding played one of his best games with 30 disposals. Subiaco also had 5 multiple-goal scorers, with Campbell Henderson, Richard Bartlett, Jacob Evitt, Keeshawn Cook, and Cade Abala all kicking 2 goals. Cade’s second specifically deserves a special shout-out for how spectacular it was; a snap from the boundary line 30 metres out that miraculously bounced over a Sharks defender for a goal as the 3QT siren sounded.
Ultimately, both Subi squads earned places in their respective 2nd Semi-Finals, with a week break and a place in their Grand Finals on offer for the winners. Both the Colts and the Reserves will take on Claremont at Lane Group Stadium on Sunday. Colts at 8:50am and Reserves at 11:25am. If you can't make the journey down both matched will be live and free on Streamer. Find below the updated Grand Final pathway.
