Subi's Season Comes to an End

Wednesday, September 18, 2024 - 2:56 PM by Harrison Page

Subiaco’s 2024 season officially ended on Sunday, with losses in both the Colts and Reserves Preliminary Finals at Steel Blue Oval.

The Colts first took on Swan Districts in a tightly contested match, eventually losing by 13 points. The game saw 8 changes in lead, with the margin never surpassing 14 points and total possession split 46%/54% in the Swans favour.

Malakai Champion and Finley Henderson stood out with dominant performances in the forward line. Champion being instrumental in Subi’s ability to push the ball forward on the day. Henderson managed 2 goals, including a fast-thinking soccer off the ground in a congested goal square that would make any highlight reels of the match.

In the centre, Thomas Macgillivray put in a good shift at work, racking up 20 disposals, including 5 inside 50 entries.

However, the highlight of the squad on the day was, without a doubt, Wesley Walley. An offensive wrecking ball, he landed 6 tackles, several of which were chase-downs that would undoubtedly have had police recruitment teams leaning forward in their seats. One particular tackle and the resulting holding the ball decision also led Walley to kick Subi’s first goal of the day.

Unfortunately, the intense arm wrestle eventually fell to the Swans’ favour; when only a point separated the two sides halfway into the final term, two goals from the Swans sealed the game.

Later in the day came the turn of the Reserves, who faced East Fremantle in what was expected to be just as close of a match. These two sides happened to face each other only two weeks prior in a Qualifying Final, where Subiaco barely edged out of a hard-fought contest with a 4-point victory. This time, however, was a very different story, as East Fremantle ran away with a convincing 80-point thrashing.

East Fremantle dominated every statistic; 319 disposals to Subi’s 257, 51 i50s to Subi’s 31. Inevitably, frustrations with how the match was progressing eventually boiled over, and amidst some bursts of ugly gameplay the Sharks also scored some easy free kicks and goals from penalties.

Lurking beneath the sour end to the season were some bright spots. Rylie Morgan and Noah Ash were both highlights of the Lions side, seemingly always finding the ball and pushing forward whenever they could and accumulating 21 and 20 disposals respectively. Benjamin Golding was also a pivotal part of the squad’s few successes in the match; his manoeuvrability in the centre being the key to some great controlled passages of play.

Jordan Faraone also enjoyed some success up forward, kicking 3 of Subiaco’s 5 goals for the match

Despite the losses, the matches marked the end of successful seasons for both squads, officially finishing 3rd and playing finals footy in both the Colts and Reserves grades. The players will officially cap off the season at the Taylor Medal Night on October 3rd and the Outridge Medal Night on October 4th, celebrating a great season for the Subiaco Football Club by determining the Best & Fairest players of the club in 2024.
