Men's Footy Update with Greg Clark

Tuesday, December 17, 2024 - 12:30 PM

With Christmas just around the corner, Club Captain Greg Clark has shot off to Japan for a short break.

We caught him prior to departure for a brief update on how he sees the team progressing.

Firstly, how are you progressing physically?

Since August, progress has been slow and steady. I managed the injury from February, but it worsened to the point where I couldn't function without anti-inflammatory drugs. After four months of intensive rehab, I'm now back to running and nearly at full capacity in the gym. It's exciting to get closer to training with the squad every day.

It must have been hard being injured in your first year coming back and as club captain?

It was really tough. I had high expectations to contribute to the club's success, so when the injury started, I tried to push through it, which only made things worse. However, I learned valuable lessons: to lean on my teammates, not take everything on myself, and focus on our process rather than the outcome. After ruling out the rest of the 2024 season, I enjoyed assisting the coaches and taking on an off-field role, getting to know the entire squad and each player better.

There have been a few former greats retire; how do we recover from loosing them?

Subiaco has notoriously been a club which has a soldier out;soldier in mentality. Although we have lost a number of club greats, we have a number of future club greats ready to start leaving their legacy as the players in the past have done the exact same.

What is the focus of the Preseason?

Compete in everything we do and being elite. This has been really evident in all our gym and fitness testing, however there have been opportunities in every session to compete with one another and this has been really embraced by the playing group.

How has the vibe been at training leading into Christmas?

There has been a real workman environment leading into Christmas. The group has been unreal at just getting to work with zero complaints, zero issues and just embracing whatever challenges have been thrown at us, and there have been a few already with sessions doing various training whether it be hills sessions, rowing sessions but we have taken it all head on, which is a great tone setter for the season.

Message for Members leading into Christmas?
Thank you for being an integral part of our club and especially for the support in the 2024 season. Relax, recharge, and enjoy the company of your loved ones over the break and we look forward to having your support in the 2025 season.
