Subiaco’s Futures in Good Hands

The WAFL Futures program kicked off over the weekend, with the Subi boys challenging Peel Thunder’s squad at Lane Group Stadium Saturday afternoon.
The Futures is a talent pathway program for under-16 boys, who play in a 7-game season that lasts from March to April annually. 9 WAFL clubs compete, in addition to a representative side for the South West Talent Academy.
“Development is the major priority throughout the program, with the specific aim to develop the individuals to play in a team environment,” Subiaco’s Futures coach John Simmons explains. “The goal is to have the boys best equipped for Colts [the U19s league] and Senior football at Subiaco. There is a strong link with the Colts program, with players invited to train with the higher level group and constant communication between coaches to make sure that the transition from Futures to Colts is not too daunting.”
There is also a strong focus on what it takes to be a footy player off the field, Simmons says. “A big focus of ours is on football resilience, on coping with the reality of higher-level football when you are not playing and working on your personal strengths and weaknesses.”
This year’s Futures squad, which includes 30 metro players born in 2009 and 2010, also includes 10 players from Subiaco’s regional recruitment zones in Kalgoorlie and Esperance.
“This program is a vital step for our regional boys,” Simmons explained.
“Throughout the 14’s and 15’s some of the regional boys have been introduced and integrated with the metro boys. Throughout the program the regional players will be exposed to additional carnivals, coaching and games.”
“Their commitment and sacrifice is a testament to their character and willingness to be involved with the Subiaco Football Club.”
After their 47-point defeat to Peel last weekend, the Subi Futures season continues on Saturday afternoon with a match against South Fremantle at Fremantle Community Bank Oval.
