Wheelchair Round 1 Recap

A new season of wheelchair AFL kicked off on Sunday with Subiacos usual band of hard core players, Ryan Zilioli, Jennifer Rennie, Oliver Williams, Mark Adams, Shaun Buckingham, Shane Bell, and Wayne Williams. This year we have a new lifeline direct to the Lions with WAFL player Dylan Prance generously volunteering his time to keep the team on the straight and narrow.

This new 2026 format has the first half of the season’s games being played north of the river at Swan Active in Beechboro and the last half south at Leisurefit Melville. This will make travelling a little easier for players and spectators who come from all over Perth and as far as Collie each week.

Our Round 1 game on Sunday afternoon was against East Fremantle Sharks. The first and last quarters were dominated by Sharks player Ben Moncrieff who scored an amazing 16 goals for the match. Subi was trailing extensively at quarter time but managed to claw back some much needed points with accurate game play through the second and third quarters. Jennifer Rennie put through a career best four goals followed by Wayne Arnott with three and a single each from Shaun and Mark. By the final whistle Sharks had taken the win 115 to 68.

It’s been a long off season so this first round was a good warm up for what will hopefully be Subiaco’s best year yet.
