The Club launched its long-awaited Diehard’s Deck last weekend at the East Fremantle match and it was chock a block full of former legends, present to see a great one-point win from the new viewing area behind the interchange bench.
On hand was Brian Taylor, Todd Holmes, Luke Newick, Mick Lee, Col Williams, Chad Cossom, Phil Lamb, Kevin Merrifield, Brad Smith, Rod Willet, Aiden Parker, Benny Keevers, and Laurie Keene to name a few.
The key feature of the room is the large silver frames of black and white photographs of individuals to have been initiated as ‘Diehards’. The ‘Diehard’ concept was formalised in 1999 when the Club selected a committee to select 100 individuals who had made a significant contribution to the Subiaco Football Club. These people were announced during the 2000 season. An additional combined 10 members were announced in 2005 and 2010 taking the total to 110.
“The Club hopes the new space can be a spectacular way of passing on some Subiaco Football Club history to everyone who views it, including all our players.” said Club Commercial Manager Joe Georgiades. “We hope it can also facilitate networking and fundraising as we host more events at the venue.”
Selecting whose image made it into the frames was a combination of their status at the club and having a suitable high-res photo on hand. “I think a system where we get some new Diehards up on the wall each year is the way to go”.
The Diehard’s Deck has replaced the unsightly Statistician’s Box and was constructed by club partner AE Hoskins and has been fitted out through a number of donations:-
