Subiaco has locked in its first win of the 2025 League season with a win over the West Coast Eagles last Friday night. The 19-point victory, under lights at Mineral Resources Park on Friday night, is a swift recovery from Round 1’s close defeat and places Subi in the middle of the table as one of four sides with both a loss and a win on the record.
“The highlight of the night for me was the way we won,” Jack Cooley explained. “It wasn’t just about getting the 4 points, it felt like a really strong team performance and one that gives us a lot of confidence moving forward. It’s evident that we are capable of matching it with top sides, as long as we trust our process.”
The 4 points were the result of a major group effort, Cooley points out, with many players putting in the work to contribute. Archer May was a highlight in the forward line, collecting 9 marks to kick 3 goals, while fellow forward Ryan Borchet kicked a solid 5 of his own.
Jordan Snadden stood out in the centre, pushing the game forward at every opportunity with 7 inside 50 entries, while Marlin Corbett and Galen Savigni formed part of Subi’s strong defensive performance, collecting 28 and 21 disposals respectively.
A special shoutout, however, must be made for Cade Abala. Having played 16 games for Subiaco’s Reserves side since 2024, Abala finally made his League debut in Friday’s match, but sustained a concussion within the opening minutes of the match.
“I think it’s gotta be acknowledged the work he did to get to where he is,” Cooley said. “And while it was terrible to see him not be able to sing the song with us, I have no doubt he’ll get his opportunity again and will be able to show everyone exactly what he’s capable of.”
Despite the unfortunate loss of Abala, spirits amongst the squad are high after the course-correcting win, with the Subiaco spirit shining through in the post-game celebrations.
“After the win we had all the family and friends come into the change rooms and just talk about the game. There was music, a few drinks and just unreal vibes that really capped off the night,” Cooley shared.
“Times like that really made me realise how special this football club is. I can’t wait for many more years of that to come.”
Subiaco’s next challenge comes in the form of a Saturday night home clash with West Perth, under lights at Sullivan Logistics Stadium at 7.10pm.
