Schofield Strengthens Coaching Stocks

Author: Admin Subiaco FC

Incoming Head Coach Jarrad Schofield knows what it takes to build a successful WAFL team – his last season in the WAFL system in 2018 saw him deliver an undefeated League season, with additional Club Premierships achieved in the Reserves and Colts.

During his time at Subiaco Jarrad netted three premierships as a player (2006, 2007, 2008) and three as a Coach (2014, 2015, 2018).

Since then, he has expanded his coaching résumé, adding AFL experience with Port Adelaide and West Coast as an Assistant Coach, before taking over the reins as Head Coach of West Coast following Adam Simpson’s departure in 2024.

Rejoining Jarrad on the 2026 coaching panel is club legend Darren ‘Rumba’ Rumble. Rumba is no stranger to premiership success, having won six League flags as a player. Since then, Darren has gained additional experience with the State 18s Program and with the Gold Coast Suns in a player welfare capacity.

“Darren is known as one of the best key backman in recent WAFL history and will be a great mentor with regards to developing our team’s defensive skills and the back six,” said Schofield.  “He also knows what it takes to win premierships and will help instil a strong Club Culture amongst our playing group”.

“It’s great to be back home. I’m excited to once again be working alongside Nigel and Paul. We had a fun year together in 2021 which ended with a premiership under Beau. Having been Jarrad’s teammate and then be coached by him, I now get the opportunity to coach with him. He’ll obviously have some new ideas from his time in the AFL, so I’m looking forward to learning from him and the other coaches once again” said Rumble.

Joining the coaching group for 2026 is 2004 Simpson Medallist Paul Vines who in recent years has been coaching Williamstown in the VFL, as well as serving as Head Coach of Scarborough in the PFL.

“Vinsey was a line coach back in 2018 and having worked with him previously, I’m delighted to have his experience as a player and coach onboard to form a really formidable coaching team.” said Schofield.

“I’m really excited to be back at the football club and looking forward to being part of what will hopefully be a successful 2026 season” said Vines.

Schofield, Rumble and Vines will be joined in the coaches’ box by recently inducted Life Member Nigel Hamilton, who has been a mainstay for the playing group, having coached at the club since 2013 after leaving South Fremantle.

‘I am delighted to be part of the senior coaching team for 2026,” said Hamilton. “To have three experienced coaches – Schofield, Rumble, and Vines return to the club is a strong base to build from. I am looking forward to working with these men along with Lowndes as look to build a senior program that is highly respected once again”.

New club CEO Kellie Properjohn said she was keen to enhance the club’s coaching panel going into her first WAFL season, “The club is focused on getting the right depth and experience in our coaching group, to give our players the best chance for their development and success” she said. “It’s also great to have former club champions Darren and Paul coming back to their home at the Lions.  The club values its heritage, so we hope to see more past players from all eras getting back down to the Club and supporting our playing group in our 2026 season.”
