Subiaco have continued their winning streak in the WAFLW this week with a hard-earned victory over Swan Districts at Steel Blue Oval last Saturday. The 24-point victory has secured a position for the Lions at the top of the ladder with an unbeaten record and a sky-high percentage.
While the second quarter had flashes of what could’ve been a Swan Districts comeback, the Lions delivered an overall dominant performance; Swans were left completely scoreless in the first term, and failed to kick a major at all within the second half.
“The way we play as a team… We never stop working hard and we never give up,” Olivia Wolmarans, a key part of Subi’s powerful backline, said of the game. “We knew we were up for a challenge, but we approached the game the way we would approach any game.”
Beatrice Devlyn also shone in the back half on the day, being a major pain for the Swans as she continued to force turnovers throughout the afternoon.
Subi’s strong midfield also continues to present problems for opposition sides.
Maggie MacLachlan, continuing her impressive 2025 season after returning from injury, was a key player in the midfield, collecting 20 disposals and a game-high 3 inside 50 entries.
Krstel Petrevski and Hayley Corlett also shone in the centre; Petrevski with 19 disposals and a solid 8 tackles, and Corlett with 22 disposals and an incredible 11 marks.
“The midfield works so well together; you’d think they’ve been playing together for years,” Wolmarans said.
Also dominating around the ball are Paige Sheppard and Lisa Steane, who continue to top the stat sheets every week with 24 and 26 disposals respectively. Layla Quinn-Schofield also stood out, kicking 3 goals on the day.
Ultimately, the Lions were unstoppable, with every player and position contributing to an all-around fantastic victory.
“The feeling in the changerooms right now is just “Energy, Energy, Energy!” Wolmarans said. “We definitely take it week by week; different teams, different strengths and all that. But it’s sure nice to have 3 wins in the bag.”
“We just feed off of everyone’s energy and play our type of footy!”
Subiaco saw similar success in the Rogers Cup this past weekend, with the Lions defeating Swan Districts by 3 points for back-to-back victories.
Subiaco’s next challenge in the WAFLW season comes in the form of a Good Friday clash with East Fremantle at The Good Grocer Park at 12.10pm.
